What you need to know Every year, we’ll pop round to check your gas appliances. We’re not being fussy, the law says we’ve got to do it every 12 months. If it’s not done, it puts everyone at risk, and we could be prosecuted. We’ll send you a letter about 10 days before your appointment. The visit usually takes about an hour, and we’ll check: Your gas appliances Gas cooker (visual inspection) Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms If the time doesn’t work for you, no worries, just give us a ring on 0300 111 0000 and we’ll try to fit around school runs, shifts, or whatever you’ve got on. We’ve even got some evening and weekend slots if that’s easier. What if something fails the check? If it’s our appliances, we’ll sort it – repair or replace. If it’s yours and it’s unsafe, we’ll have to disconnect it and ask you to get a Gas Safe engineer to fix it. By law, it can’t be used until it’s safe again. Solid fuel appliance safety Got a solid fuel appliance? We’ll service it once a year – that means sweeping chimneys, cleaning flues, and if you’ve got a solid fuel boiler, we’ll give that a good clean inside too. We’ll also fit a British Standard carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as the appliance, to keep everyone safe. Remember: Don’t block vents – they’re there for your safety. Let us in for safety checks – it’s part of your tenancy agreement. No new solid fuel appliances are allowed in WCHG homes. Any questions? Call our Gas Servicing team on 0300 111 0000. Spotting a problem early Give us a call straight away on 0300 111 0000 if you notice: Black marks or soot near an appliance A flame that’s orange or yellow instead of blue Lots of condensation in rooms with appliances Dizziness, headaches, or sickness when the gas is on
Faulty appliances can cause dangerous gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning, a silent killer. That’s why we legally must check your heating every year. It’s about keeping you, your family, and your neighbours safe. We don’t take risks.
